Why Dominion?
by Pastor's Corner on March 5th, 2015

“Then God said, Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule (let them have dominion – KJV) over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” (Gen. 1:26 NIV)

Out of all the things that God could have given man, He chose to give mankind dominion. The question must be raised: “Why Dominion?” Let me remind you that God does everything with purpose in mind.  In other words, God had a specific purpose for dominion and entrusted that purpose to man.  In this context, one might consider the purpose for dominion as more important than the man it was entrusted to. The Father needed someone to be responsible for dominion so He created man and shared this responsibility with him.  Although God had created many things before He created the man, it is evident that nothing created before man could handle the responsibility of dominion.  Dominion required someone special because God obviously put a greater priority on its worth.

One might deduce that if dominion was so valuable, the one it was entrusted to must also be valuable.  The Bible confirms this reality by testifying that “God made man in his own image and in his own likeness.”  Man, male and female, is the only thing created literally to represent God in the earth.  This makes mankind valuable!  In other words, his purpose speaks to his value.  Put another way, because God gave man dominion, he must now rule.  His purpose is revealed to him.  He is to be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. He was created to represent God in ruling over His creation.  This is the dominion mandate!

Both the Old and New Testament parallel this word dominion to kingdom.  In this sense, it refers to “the rule of God” or even “the dominion of God.”  Although it can be interpreted as “reign” or “rule,” the more important inference is over what. We know that God is the source of every created thing and He also provides for or sustains everything created.  He is Lord of all creation and the earth belongs to Him because everything created was created to fulfill His purposes.  God did not intend for anything He created to be outside of its purpose. As a result, He needed someone special to be responsible to ensure that this did not happen.

Of course we know that man is outside of his created purpose.  He has somehow forgotten about the dominion mandate and struggles to rule and reign in accordance with the Father’s original purpose.  In fact, every man and woman struggles personally with ruling in their personal lives while mankind in general seems to be losing this battle as well. Be encouraged and be reminded that the calling to rule and reign is in your DNA. You were created to live, operate, and maintain dominion in the earth representing the Lord of all creation.  May it be your heart’s desire to fulfill the “dominion mandate” and remind others that they, too, are called to dominion!
